Site testing

On-site testing of turbine prototypes is essential for hydropower plant owners when prototype performance guarantees cannot be validated through model testing, or when manufacturing has not followed internationally proven procedures and tolerances.

Scotta Turboinštitut offers a comprehensive range of turbine site testing services, designed to accurately assess turbine performance under real operating conditions and to support plant owners in optimizing efficiency, reliability, and operational safety.

Our services include:

  • Efficiency measurements before and after refurbishment or major repair, performed using absolute discharge measurement methods or the index test method.
  • On-cam setting optimization for Kaplan turbines to achieve optimal operating performance.

Discharge measurement methods:

  • Current meter measurements, using up to 320 current meters for low-head Kaplan, tubular, or Francis turbines
  • Ultrasonic flow meter measurements
  • Winter–Kennedy method

Dynamic characteristic measurements, including:

  • Vibration
  • Pressure pulsations
  • Shaft displacement
  • Noise

These measurements support problem-solving during operation and help fine-tune turbine characteristics.

All testing is carried out in full compliance with IEC 60041.
